John Scalzi Old Man's War mini hardcover

Miniature books! With miniature pages! And perfect miniature fingers and toes!

Okay, not the latter, but we’re delighted to announce a fistful of small-format 4×6 paper-over-board hardcovers selected from our distant and recent backlist, plus a new-to-book-form story collection by Charlie Jane Anders and the first standalone edition of Brandon Sanderson’s Edgedancer. All coming this October 3rd!

The full list of releases follows.

Six Months, Three Days, Five Others by Charlie Jane Anders

Six Months Three Days Five Others Charlie Jane Anders

The man who can see the future has a date with the woman who can see many possible futures.

The Charlie Jane Anders collection, Six Months, Three Days, Five Others, collects all six of the award-winning author’s original Tor.com stories thus far, including “Clover,” set in the world of All the Birds in the Sky, which answers the question on everybody’s lips: What happened to Patricia’s cat?

Old Man’s War by John Scalzi

Old Man's War John Scalzi

Considered one of John Scalzi’s defining works, Old Man’s War is the first book in a space opera that currently spans 6 books.

John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife’s grave. Then he joined the army.

Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater. The bulk of humanity’s resources are in the hands of the Colonial Defense Force. Everybody knows that when you reach retirement age, you can join the CDF. They don’t want young people; they want people who carry the knowledge and skills of decades of living.

Wild Cards by George R. R. Martin

Wild Cards George R. R. Martin

The first introductory volume to George R. R. Martin’s vast superhero universe, Wild Cards tells you everything you need to know about how our world could become full of superpowered peoples. From there you can stick with the chronology or jump around to one of the 20+ volumes set in a world batted between Jokers and Aces.

Edgedancer by Brandon Sanderson

Edgedancer Brandon Sanderson

“Lift prepared to be awesome.”

From Sanderson’s epic Stormlight Archive fantasy series comes Edgedancer, a standalone novella originally available in Arcanum Unbounded, a story collection that explains the various connections in Sanderson’s literary “cinematic universe” known as The Cosmere.

Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

Edgedancer is not a great introduction to the Stormlight Archive. New readers will have little no idea what is going on, and if it does pique your interest, it will spoil a lot of important stuff from the preceding two volumes. If you’re curious about Brandon Sanderson, read The Emperor’s Soul. If you’re curious about The Stormlight Archive… I dunno, read a synopsis or something? It’s hard to sum up. Each volume is 1,000 pages long. How about you just read it? It’s great.

Now, From the Two Rivers? Sure, that’s fine for a short volume that will help you gauge your interest in a long series.

My opinion is that Edgedancer (this volume will also start off with the Lift interlude) might be a great introduction to the Stormlight Archive—but I’d love to hear from anyone who actually did read it before The Way of Kings, which admittedly is hard to get into for many readers.

Lift’s narrative is self-contained, in a different part of Roshar than the main sequence, and asks and answers different questions, focusing on a different aspect of the magic. All but one of the characters in the Lift Interlude is newly introduced, and the other one appeared in the Ym interlude for only a few paragraphs. Then Edgedancer continues from that point, with the addition of only one other character from the main sequence—and if you read Edgedancer first, you’d very possibly forget any of the spoilers that it reveals about him by the time you get to the end of Words of Radiance.

So, it could actually work fine. I am very curious to see how it would play out for new readers.

Ah, well, that does change matters somewhat, with the Lift interlude being included. I guess we’ll have to see what happens when it comes out. I don’t see myself getting into TWoK based on enjoyment of Edgedancer alone, considering how different they are, taken in isolation, but who knows?

@6: Just to confirm, all of these are mini-hardcover books. The images haven’t been released to retailers yet–the link to the original eBook cover art post relates to the art for the mini, but the ISBN/retailer link to the actual mini is not available yet.

Can someone please tell me if these are the only books reedited or, for example, in the case of The Wheel of Time, it will be the entire series? Because that would be awesome!

@7: I don’t think I can fully agree. I tend to agree with @1. Yes, the points you bring up are good, and this story is fairly self-contained; but there are points that I feel are major spoilers to The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance. The biggest of these would be information about a certain “fork” that Lift uses and its connection to questions raised multiple times during the first two Stormlight books and answered at the end of Words of Radiance. I feel that Edgedancer does a great job of explaining and expounding on the rules involved, but would take a lot of the mystery away from the issue if read before The Way of Kings. I don’t think that particular spoiler would be forgotten, even if the one you bring up would be.

Anyway, that’s my thought on the matter. I love the idea of this coming as a standalone! But I, personally, would not recommend it as an intro to The Stormlight Archive for the reason I mention above.

Any chance we get Ghost Brigade? I can only find the  mass paperback version and I loved the mini hardcover version of Old Man’s War.

Do you plan on publishing the entire Wheel of Time series in this format?  I really like the size instead of having to read the large books.

I am also wondering if the entire Wheel of Time will be released in these mini hardcovers.
